There is extensive data supporting the use of Botox® for chronic migraine. Botox® works by blocking multiple pain signaling pathways and has the additional benefit of limited side effects. Small amounts of Botox® are injected under the skin into targeted areas of the head, neck, and shoulders, following the long-established PREEMPT Protocol for optimal chronic migraine treatment. Injections are repeated every 12 weeks, and in clinical trials, they have been shown to reduce migraines by over 50% in patients who suffer from chronic migraine.
For patients who do not qualify for extended health coverage of Botox® for chronic migraine, targeted injections using small amounts of Botox® may help alleviate headaches. Dr. Hendon can assess you for this during your consultation visit.

Botox® is also effective for TMJ-related pain, which can contribute to migraine.
Relaxation of the masseter muscles may reduce pain due to grinding and clenching.
A study in 2016 focusing on patients with tension-type headache and temporomandibular joint dysfunction demonstrated improvement in symptoms with targeted injections into the masseters and temporalis muscles. (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4807183/) -
Blepharospasm is the abnormal spasm and contraction of the eyelids and surrounding muscles, and it can impact normal vision.
Botox® is indicated for alleviation of these symptoms and is covered by BC Pharmacare for this indication. -
Dystonia consists of abnormal head and neck positioning and contractions, which can result in chronic neck pain and headaches. Botox® is effective in managing these symptoms by relaxing the muscles.
-
Hemifacial spasm consists of abnormal facial twitching, commonly just on one side of the face. There are a myriad of causes and requires a full neurological workup. Botox® is effective in treating this condition.
-
Facial tics, commonly seen with Tourette’s syndrome, may be treated with Botox® but may not be covered by BC Pharmacare.
-
Botox® is dedicated to the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis that is inadequately treated with topical agents. A medical workup with your family doctor would be required prior to treating with Botox® to ensure that a treatable medical cause of this disorder is not found.
